The New York Times Paintings: November – December 2015
A catalog for the exhibition that turned the daily front page of record into painting.
Published by Petzel to accompany The New York Times Paintings: November – December 2015 (November 10, 2016 – January 14, 2017), the book documents a body of work made from screenshots of the nytimes.com homepage captured over two months in late 2015. Guyton fed the files through an Epson 9900 large-format printer in UltraChrome HDR ink on linen, producing 84-by-69-inch canvases where headlines about terror, climate, and the coming election sit beside sidebar ads and navigation bars, complete with the glitches, streaks, and misregistrations the printer introduces. Edited by Jessica Li and designed by Joseph Logan, the 80-page volume pairs plates of the paintings with installation views of Petzel's uptown townhouse galleries the show opened, pointedly, two days after the 2016 presidential election.
Wade Guyton (b. 1972, Hammond, Indiana) has made paintings since the early 2000s by dragging folded linen through inkjet printers, letting the machine's errors stand as the work's mark-making. The Whitney Museum surveyed the work in Wade Guyton OS in 2012 long affiliated with Petzel and Galerie Gisela Capitain, he now shows with Matthew Marks Gallery and Galerie Chantal Crousel.
