Wade Guyton: Zeichnungen von Drama und Frühstück im Atelier Vol. II

by Wade Guyton
Walther König · 2018 · Paperback

Zeichnungen von Drama und Frühstück im Atelier Vol. II is the second half of a two-volume catalogue documenting Wade Guyton's studio floor as both subject and support, this volume tied to the condensed London restaging of a Munich exhibition.

Volume I, published by Walther König in 2017, accompanied Wade Guyton: Das New Yorker Atelier at Museum Brandhorst in Munich; this second volume documents its abridged restaging as Das New Yorker Atelier, Abridged at the Serpentine Gallery, London, from September 2017 to February 2018. Both books continue the format of Guyton's earlier trilogy of studio catalogues, photographing stacks of his inkjet-printed "drawings" - pages torn from art history books and overprinted - laid on the glossy floor of his studio, painted black for this iteration.

Guyton (born 1972, Hammond, Indiana) has worked since the mid-2000s with a large-format inkjet printer as his primary tool, feeding book pages, canvas and linen through it to produce paintings built from a mechanical, repeatable process. These studio-floor catalogues treat the accumulating printed sheets themselves as a subject, extending that inquiry into the space where the work is made.
