Drawings

by Lee Lozano
Hauser & Wirth · 2006

Lee Lozano: Drawings is the first publication devoted to Lozano's drawings, and none of the works in it had been published before.

Barry Rosen and Jaap van Liere edited the book, which Yale University Press published in October 2006. It gathers early narrative and figurative drawings made between 1960 and 1964. They range from precise, formally worked sheets, among them drawings of tools with a sexual charge, to looser gestural ones in graphite with touches of coloured crayon. Some are text pieces that read as part diary and part social record. The book ends with selections from Lozano's own diaries, arranged like an artist's sketchbook. The hardcover has 194 pages, with 120 black-and-white and 60 colour illustrations.

Lozano (1930-1999) was part of the 1960s New York art scene, and her first exhibition was at the Bianchini Gallery in 1966. She painted tools from 1963 and later made monochrome Wave paintings. In 1969 she began General Strike Piece, a set of instructions to herself to avoid public functions of the art world, and in 1971 she began Decide to Boycott Women, which she kept up for the rest of her life.
