Private Book 1
Private Book 1 is Karma's facsimile of the first of the eleven surviving pocket notebooks that Lee Lozano kept in New York in the late 1960s.
Karma published it in 2016 as a 136-page spiral-bound paperback, 5 by 3 inches. The first edition is out of print and a second edition followed in 2019. A bookseller's listing dates the handwriting to 1968–69 and says Lozano edited the notebook on 25 January 1972. It quotes an entry headed June 1968 in which she lists institutions she does not believe in, from competition and marriage to possession and god.
Lozano (1930–99) was a painter whose work moved toward text and instruction pieces. In Dropout Piece of 1970 she left the New York art world, and she later lived in Dallas until her death. Karma is reissuing all eleven notebooks as spiral-bound facsimiles, one volume at a time.
