by Purple Magazine
Purple · 2021

Spring/Summer 2021, the Island issue, opening with Édouard Glissant on archipelagic thought and running to eighteen covers.

Donna Haraway, Catherine Malabou, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Carsten Höller all appear, alongside features on the Ibiza myth, wild swimming, island undergrounds, Sweden's islands and the red island. The artists include Lisa Yuskavage, Miriam Cahn, Elizabeth Glaessner, Raoul Hausmann, Alejandro Cardenas, Anna Uddenberg, Rachel Rose, Mark Dion, Lola Montes Schnabel and Torbjørn Rødland. Architecture runs from Isamu Noguchi's playscapes and Ricardo Bofill's Marina Baie des Anges to Terunobu Fujimori, Le Grand Chalet, La Cupola and Philippe Starck. Fashion covers Mugler, Balenciaga, Prada, Chanel, Comme des Garçons, Gucci, Berluti, Emporio Armani, Jil Sander and Ami.

The issue was assembled during the second year of lockdown, and its subject, an island of one's own, is the reason for the covers being handed to painters rather than photographers.
