Purple Magazine Issue 36: The Mexico Issue

Fall/Winter 2021, the Mexico issue, with fifteen covers and its features reported almost entirely from Mexico City and Oaxaca.

Daniel Pinchbeck writes on the country's psychedelic renaissance, Elena Reygadas on corn, Sayak Valencia and Juan Villoro on the present, and the issue reprints Antonin Artaud's account of the peyote dance. The artists include Dr. Lakra interviewed by Aaron Rose, Frieda Toranzo Jaeger, Paloma Contreras Lomas, Pedro Friedeberg, Stefan Brüggemann, Tezontle, Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Agustín Hernández. Bárbara Sánchez-Kane and Víctor Barragán appear among the new Mexican labels. Dorian López photographs the muxes of Juchitán, and a feature titled "Nos están matando" addresses the killing of women. Josef Albers in Mexico supplies one cover and Robert Nava another.

Juergen Teller shoots Balenciaga, Dario Catellani shoots Chanel, and Olivier Zahm photographs Flores Cosmos alongside interviews with Homero Aridjis and Alejandro Jodorowsky.
